Fiat Chrysler May Be Sued for Diesel Emissions

If no agreement is reached soon, the Justice Department plans to file a civil lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV because of excess diesel vehicle emissions.

In January, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) accused Fiat Chrysler of illegally using undisclosed software to allow diesel emission levels that were too high in around 104,000 vehicles. The accusation came after a probe that stemmed from a similar investigation into Volkswagen diesel vehicles.

Ongoing Talks

The California Air Resources Board and the EPA have entered into talks with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) regarding these excess diesel emissions and whether the agencies would allow the sale of the automaker's 2017 diesel vehicles.

A California federal judge set a hearing for late May for a series of lawsuits filed by vehicle owners against FCA. The Justice Department was expected to file an action by then if an agreement hadn't been reached.

FCA Viewpoint

FCA said it believes any sort of legal action could be counterproductive to the ongoing discussions with the California Air Resources Board and the EPA.

The company went on to say that, if there is any litigation, it would vigorously defend itself, particularly when it comes to any claims that it intentionally installed devices that would cheat United States emissions tests.

Company Responsibility

This isn't the first time a car company has been accused of cheating on emissions testing. And excess diesel emissions can be a problem for everyone.

Hopefully, this matter will be resolved soon. Then, vehicle owners can rest assured they are driving the environmentally responsible vehicles they paid for.

Turn to an Attorney

When companies cut corners on their products, consumers can suffer the consequences. If you have been injured or otherwise suffered because of a company's negligence, you may be able to file a claim for compensation.
