Loved One in Jail? Here's How You Can Help

handcuffs

Getting that dreaded call that a loved one has ended up in jail can be an extremely stressful time both for you and them. Being arrested is certainly not something you want to tell everybody! But the reality is, it could happen to anyone. Even the most upstanding citizen, who just may have happened to put a foot wrong or been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Of course, knowing that someone you care about is in jail will leave you wanting to know how you can get them out as soon as possible. Do you really have the money to be able to bail them out? Probably not.

Thankfully, you can use bail bonds to help your loved one out and get them home quickly.

What are bail bonds?

Most people can't afford a hefty bond, so bail bonds can help you out through this difficult time.

A bail bond agent will post the bond on your behalf and charge you a fee for doing so. The fee is normally around 10% but can vary. Depending on the amount of the bond, you may be asked to put up collateral for security.

This is an excellent way to get the bond paid without having to think about taking out a second mortgage on your home or emptying your savings account.

How do I get my loved one out of jail?

It is possible to get the process started online, otherwise you can call or drop into the agent's office.

But before you contact the bail bond agent, you will need to get the following information:

  • The defendants' name
  • Where they are being held
  • What charges they have
  • Their booking number

The bail bond agent that you work with will meet you at the jail to post the bond and ask you to sign some paperwork. In most cases the defendant is released relatively quickly.

What happens next?

After your loved one is released from jail, it's in your best interest to ensure that they turn up to their court hearing.

If they do: You bail bond will dissolve and the agent keeps their percentage. Everyone is happy!

If they don't: A bounty hunter will be employed by the bail bond agent to return your loved one to the court. But if they vanish and don't appear within a certain time frame, you will be held responsible and collateral will be seized to offset the payment made.

A bail bond agent can be a lifesaver

It's great to know that if you find yourself needing to raise bond money to release a loved one from jail, that there is someone there to help out financially when you are unable to. Bail bond agents are experienced with dealing with jails and the legal system, so they'll be able to talk you through the process and ensure you have the right paperwork and understand your responsibilities so you can get your loved one home as quick as possible.
